If sin is always punished by death, why am I not dead?

If sin is always punished by death, why am I not dead. And why is Jesus always portrayed white.

My response is in Green:

Good questions. Let me start with the first one. Yes sin is always punished by death, but that death is not always immediate. Let me ask you a question, is there any doubt in your mind that you will one day die?

This is exactly the argument Satan used on Eve in the garden. (Genesis 3:1-6 NIV) Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" {2} The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, {3} but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'" {4} "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. {5} "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." {6} When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Here is the rub, Satan lied to Eve, she did start to die the very instant she ate the fruit. See before this time there was no death in all of creation, but when Adam and Eve sinned, death took over everything. So God did not lie, Adam and Eve both did die, just not immediately.

Now there are two deaths also. One is the physical death that we all dread, but the other one is much worse and it is called the second death. It is when a person who has not accepted Christ as their Savior dies, and then is judged and sentenced to the second death in hell. It is a total separation from God. I am told by people that they could care less because they don't believe in God and don't know Him now, so what does it matter if they are totally separated from Him for eternity. My answer to that is you might not know Him but you are around Him now. He is everywhere around this earth. He is what gives us live and hope; all good comes from God. God even says Himself that He does good for both the evil and the righteous: (Matthew 5:44-45 NIV) But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, {45} that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

That will all end at the death of the evil person. Then and only then will the understand what total separation from God means, but it will be too late. Hell will also eventually be cast into the lake of fire. Many people envision hell as this place with fire but it is not, however, one day it will be. The people who reject God will spend eternity being punished in hell.

After Adam and Eve sinned, death as I said, came in and took control of all living things. Everything is dying. Everyone born to Adam and Eve, which means all of us, were born with that evil nature passed on from them. We were all born under that curse of death. That is exactly why God sent Jesus His Son to earth as a human. Jesus was born to a virgin and that is very important, because all humans get their sinful nature from their father. So Jesus was born sinless, He lived a sinless life and died as punishment for our sins. God the Father then raised Him back to life and He is back in heaven now. We are still born under that death sentence but now we can obtain a pardon by asking Jesus to forgive us. If we do that and believe in our hearts that He is who He said He was, then we are saved. Our bodies will still die but our soul, what makes us, us, our personality, our inner being will live forever. It will not experience the second death.

If on the other hand God killed everyone who sinned immediately, we would all be lost. That first lie we told as a child would have been our last. No one could be saved because we have all sinned. You can't ask for forgiveness until you have done something wrong and if you died the instant you did do something wrong you could not ask for forgiveness. God is just and merciful and He wants us to be forgiven, so He gives us our entire life to decide. Don't miss that, you get your entire life, but not one instant more than that. Once you die your fate is sealed. To receive a pardon from your death sentence you must ask for it before you die.

Now to your second question; why is Jesus always shown as white? I don't really have an answer other than I guess for years the audience and the artist were white so they portrayed Him that way. He was not white, nor was He black, nor was He yellow, nor was He red. If you want to get a look at what is believed to be what He looked like you need to look at those of His earthly race. The Jews and to a lesser extent the Arabs. He most likely had olive skin and dark hair and brown eyes. The Bible does not give specifics about what He looked like. It does not really matter anyway, He died for all mankind, not just one race. No one can get to heaven except through accepting Jesus Christ as their Savior.(John 14:6 NIV) Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

(Romans 10:9-10 NIV) That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. {10} For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.

Well I hope that answers your questions. Feel free to ask more if you still don't understand. I would encourage you to get a Bible and read it. Ask God to help you understand it. I would also encourage you to check out Jesus' claims and make a decision, you have your whole life, but then again none of us know how long that might be.

Take care.
