I grew up as the child of a public school teacher, who also happened to be a pastor. I attended public school and graduated from a public high school. I respect public school teachers very much, but I feel I must speak out.
I hear many Christian parents claim that they are sending their children to public school because they believe they should be salt and light to the world, or they might say that they view public school as a mission field for their child.
I have friends who teach in public schools and are Christ loving Christians, so I am not trying to demean any individual teacher in this article but I do want to draw attention to what happens in our public schools.
You often hear the words, separation of church and state, these days. Many people erroneously think that means that there is no religion taught in the public schools. They are sadly mistaken. First there is the religion of humanism which is taught in all public schools. This has been going on for some time now. They teach the kids that there is no concrete right and wrong, each individual has to determine right and wrong for themselves.
Secondly they teach the religion of Evolution. Notice that I capitalize Evolution because it is just as much a religion as Christianity. It is taught to the kids from kindergarten on through college. There is zero proof of macro Evolution, yet it is taught as scientific fact to the children. Yes there is scientific evidence for micro evolution, but micro and macro are not the same thing. Micro evolution is change in species over time, due to many factors. For example, you can breed roses to be just about any color you want them to be; that is micro evolution. You can breed dogs and get many new breeds; that is micro evolution. The point is this, when you are done you still have a flower or a dog. You can't breed a dog and come up with a squirrel, that would be macro Evolution and it just does not happen. Either naturally or by breeding.
The public schools will show the kids evidence of micro evolution and make the leap to claiming it is scientific evidence for macro Evolution. This is a bold faced lie! They buttress their lies by adding billions of years onto the time line. This too is a lie, with no evidence and it directly contradicts what God's word says.
But let me get back to the subject at hand. The public schools have the kids for about 8 hours each day. Not to mention any homework that requires study at home. Most parents spend at most one or two hours with their children per day in any real conversation or interaction.
God told the Israelites that He wanted them to teach their children about Him:
(Deuteronomy 6:6-7 NIV) These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
Why do you think that God was so adamant about the parents teaching the kids His commands? Because if they didn't, their children would reject Him and walk away from their faith.
Are we doing this today? Are we talking to our kids when we sit at home, and when we walk (drive or travel), when we lie down and when we get up? Many parents will claim that they are fulfilling this command of God by taking their children to church once a week for at most a couple of hours. Yet they are indoctrinated into the humanistic religions of the world for 8 hours a day, five days a week. Which do you think will stick with them?
So, should parents view the public schools as mission fields? Is a child strong enough in his or her faith to be able to battle the constant barrage of false teaching they are getting from their teachers and still be able to witness to other children?
Let me ask this another way. If you worked in a place where your supervisors were always pounding into your head that there is no God, that you are no more then an animal just like the rest of the animals, that there is no clear right or wrong, would you be strong enough to withstand it year after year for 12 years? Then why would you think your child is strong enough?
The reason I titled this article as I did is because I believe we are sending our children into the killing fields. Faith-killing fields. A large percentage of children from Christian homes who attend public school and then go on to college lose their faith in Jesus Christ. This should not be surprising, since they are bombarded with contradictions to the Bible, given as solid fact.
People who are confronted with 'facts' which contradict God's word, have three choices. They can reject these so called facts. They can reject the Bible. Or they can try to piece together a way for both to be true.
The problem with the third choice is that it can't work. You can't have a Bible that is true and also Evolution. It just won't work. What happens most times is that the person will decide that the Bible, while true, is not to be taken literally. So the six days of creation in Genesis become six days plus a gap of some undetermined time period, possibly billions of years.
Does putting a gap in the time line of Genesis solve the problems between Evolution and Creation? No it does not. God says that He created man by forming him out of the dust of the earth. That is not Evolution. So even if you manage to convince yourself that the six days of creation actually took 4.3 billion years, you still have a problem.
Next, on the sixth day of creation, God looked at all He had created and said that it was very good. Now, if you believe in Evolution, or in creation but add a gap to the six days, then you must also believe that there were trillions of dead animals buried on the earth the day that God looked at His creation and said it was very good. This contradicts God's word again:
(Romans 5:12 NIV) Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned-
Death came into the creation because of Adam's sin, not before his sin happened as any gap theorist would have to believe.
I am not trying to argue about Evolution, but rather to show what this teaching does to a young believer. It causes them to either out right reject God's word or try to conform it to Evolution in ways that take the truth and power out of it.
Back to the point of our children being in public school's faith-killing fields, as a mission field. It is not as if the children are sent there like a missionary is to a foreign land. They are sent to the public schools to be taught, not to teach others.
The following passage of Scripture is most often referred to when discussing marriage, but look at it closely and see if you think it applies in this situation also:
(2 Corinthians 6:14-18 NIV) Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people."
 "Therefore come out from them
and be separate,
says the Lord.
Touch no unclean thing,
and I will receive you."
"I will be a Father to you,
and you will be my sons and daughters,
says the Lord Almighty."
Now let me quote the couple of verses just before this passage:
(2 Corinthians 6:11-13 NIV) We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you. We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. As a fair exchange-I speak as to my children-open wide your hearts also.
Notice that Paul says he is speaking to them as his children. He then goes right to talking about not being yoked with unbelievers. I think this is a great passage to teach people concerning marriage to non-believers, but I think it is also important in reference to our children. As I stated before, who is going to have the greatest amount of influence on a child, the person who interacts with them for 2 hours a day or the one who interacts with them for 8 hours a day?
We are not only allowing our children to be yoked with Belial, we are allowing Belial to teach them!
The public schools have a liberal agenda and you have to hide your head in the sand to not see it. They have a homosexual agenda which they push on the kids. They have a religious agenda, which I have already commented on, Evolution. They have a humanistic agenda, which they also push on the kids.
God has been removed from public schools. Lest you think it is all religions or all gods which have been removed from the public schools, you need to understand it is the Christian God who has been removed.
Shortly after September 11, 2001, public school children in California were forced to take Muslim names, dress in traditional Muslim clothing, read from the Koran and even play a Jihad (holy war) board game. In some New York schools there are rooms set up as prayer rooms for Muslim children. Yet there are many cases where Christian children were reprimanded for silently saying grace before eating their lunch.
The kids are taught that tolerance for all lifestyles is important, with one exception, that is tolerance for the Christian lifestyle. Why are they told not to tolerate Christians? Because Christians are intolerant! Children don't see the hypocrisy in that notion.
What is this intolerance that Christians are guilty of? It is having the gall to claim their religion (Jesus Christ) is the only way to God, and condemning things like abortion and homosexuality. The kids are told that condemning the Christians is not on the same level as the Christians condemning homosexuality. But that is not the only intolerable thing that Christians are guilty of. They dare to say that things like lying and stealing and premarital sex are wrong. They are intolerant bigots who want to run everyone else's lives.
The kids are lied to and told that if Christians ever control the government they will take everyone's freedoms away. At the same time they are told of the virtues of socialism and how wonderful Muslim governments are. They are not told of Islamic laws which are enforced in many Muslim countries. Laws which make it okay to kill anyone who converts from Islam. Or how women have no rights in those countries. Nor are they even told of their own country's history. That this country was founded by Christians and the very freedoms they now enjoy are the direct result of those Christian founding fathers.
Kids are taught, through Evolution, that they are just another kind of animal, no better than any other animal. Is it so surprising that the murder rate in schools has skyrocketed?
Our kids need to know that they are not animals, they are created in the likeness of God:
(Genesis 9:4-6 NIV) "But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each man, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of his fellow man."
"Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man."
They need to be taught God's laws. Not only do they need to be taught God's laws but they need to have them reinforced to them, not contradicted as they are in the schools. Let me give you one example in closing. The public schools teach kids from kindergarten on that homosexuality is just another choice, no different then any other choice. Yet God tells us that is a lie:
(Leviticus 18:22 NIV) Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.
(Romans 1:26-27 NIV) Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
God calls homosexuality detestable and a perversion. I guess God is intolerant! How are kids suppose to deal with these contradictory views? Sadly, most kids won't even realize that there is a contradiction, because they won't have the Bible knowledge to know what God's word says. So they will naturally accept the public school view. When they do finally hear that "Christians" condemn homosexuality, they will wonder why their parents and other Christians are so bigoted and closed minded. Sadly the damage will already be done.
I beg you, on behalf of your children, think twice and do much praying before deciding to put your children in public school or deciding to leave them in public school. There are many resources available today to help you educate your child without the indoctrination that comes from the public schools.
I would like to recommend a couple of books that I think every Christian parent should read:
Persecution Author: David Limbaugh
PERSECUTED Exposing the Growing Intolerance Toward Christianity Author: Elwood McQuaid
Inside American Education Author: Thomas Sowell
These devotionals are written by Ralph Dettwiler, and reflect his views.
