A web site said God won't judge the mentally ill and that is me.

Hi, I too am considering suicide. It seems that everything the last few days has pointed me toward it. I was saved three weeks ago and the devil has really been fighting me since. I was diagnosed manic-depressive 10 years ago and I go to a christian psychiatrist and therapist. Friday I typed in the search field of my computer,"Christians and depression". Guess what came up first??? Do christians who commit suicide automatically go to hell. I thought that strange, since that was what I was already thinking. It went into detail that if a person commits suicide that means that they are "mentally ill" and that God would not judge them for it. It also talked about a book that Billy Graham had written called, Death and Dying" that God would not judge a person mentally ill the same. I am very irrational right now. I know that I'm mentally ill. I'm tired of the moods all the time. I'm on a lot of medicine but nothing seems to work for very long. I'm tired of the fight. Billy Graham also says that the only sure way to be doomed is to turn your back on the Holy Spirit. I have not done that. It says that we will not go to hell but we will have to give an account of our life. Well, I think that I've said enough. Hope to hear from you soon. I have a therapy appointment tomorrow, so I hope that it helps. I am kinda afraid to be honest with her because I'm afraid that she'll have me put in the hospital. I don't want that. I will refuse to go. I think I just need another medicine change. Maybe not. I don't know what I need anymore. Thanks for listening

My response is in Green:

It is not unusual for a new Christian to find that the devil is attacking them. Paul tells us clearly that we are in a struggle and what we should do about it. (Ephesians 6:12-18 NIV) For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. {13} Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. {14} Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, {15} and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. {16} In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. {17} Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. {18} And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. If your "Christian psychiatrist and therapist" are not telling you these same things then it is time to find counseling from someone who will.

You will find that I am very much down on "Christian" psychology because there is no such thing. There are Christians who practice psychology but their brand of psychology is still secular psychology. Your struggle is not physical nor is it mental it is spiritual just like Paul said it is.

I totally disagree with the web site you visited which said that anyone who commits suicide is mentally ill and God will not judge them. Was Judas mentally ill? Many people commit suicide who are not mentally ill. In fact what is mental illness? Oh, we use the term a lot but what does it mean?

We think of two different things when we talk about 'mental' anything. First is the physical organ we call the brain. It can be ill just like any other part of our bodies. The other thing we talk about is the mind. It is not physical and therefore the word illness takes on a very cloudy definition.

My point is that the brain can be treated physically with medical procedures, but what about the mind? Many people get a diagnosis of mental illness and are given drugs to treat it. Does that make sense if it is not a physical illness? On the other hand many people go through 'talk' treatment (i.e. counseling, therapy, etc...) where they are treated mentally by talking to another person.

Secular psychology has what it thinks are the answers but it doesn't. God is the answer. He created us and we have a need for a relationship with Him. Our problems are spiritual unless they are physical. Here is what Paul told Timothy about the people living in the last days: (2 Timothy 3:1-5 NIV) But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. {2} People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, {3} without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, {4} treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God-- {5} having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. That is us!! So many people claim to be Christians, but they deny God's power. They seem to think that the God who created them is helpless to help them, so they go to man's wisdom for help. It does not work.

If you look at the statistics of people who go to counselors and therapist you will notice something, they all go for long periods of time. Many go for years and years finding no or very little relief or at least not relief that lasts.

I am going to be blunt with you. Your entire message to me seemed to be saying that you feel you are mentally ill and that you want to believe that God will not hold you responsible if you kill yourself. Well the very fact that you are trying so hard to justify what you think you would like to do tells me that you are in control and would and should be held responsible for your actions. Let me ask you a question. Do you think God holds you responsible if you lie? How about if you steal, or kill someone else? Then why would He not hold you responsible for suicide?

Here are a couple of verses which should make you stop and think: (1 Corinthians 3:17 NIV) If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple. And: (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV) Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; {20} you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. Jesus paid with His life and we ought to honor Him and allow Him to be Lord and Master of our lives.

That is the tough part, but there is a good part too. God is still on the throne and He has not given up any of His power. If you need help then to go the Doctor who can help you: God.

Many of us get tired of having moods all the time, but it is something you have to decide to take to God and allow Him to help you with. Get out your Bible and start reading. (Romans 10:17 NIV) Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

Hold onto the promises that God gave us all. (Isaiah 40:28-31 NIV) Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. {29} He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. {30} Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; {31} but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

(Matthew 11:29-30 NIV) Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. {30} For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Rest for your soul, isn't that what you really want? Isn't that what you think suicide will give you? Well Jesus promises that rest for your soul if you will follow Him.

My heart goes out to you, but I want you to know that God loves you and He is capable of handling any and all of your problems. I am not trying to tell you to throw away all your medicine, but I am telling you that you should take stock of what is happening in your life and then go to God and ask Him to take control and help you. His has the power, He has the knowledge, and He has the love for you.

One quick side note. You said that the web site you visited said that anyone who committed suicide was mentally ill. Well I used to hear that same thing about people who murdered. I heard that a person had to be mentally ill to take someone else's life. That was before I became a Deputy Sheriff and spent 7 years on the streets. I saw people do horrible things to each other. I saw parents shoot their children, I was brothers cut each other with razor blades, I saw a brother shoot his brother over a pork chop, I saw people shot and killed over a curse word, or over a couple of dollars. These people were not mentally ill they were selfish and mean. I just could not understand it, until I looked in God's word and found the answer: (Genesis 8:21 NIV) The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: "Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.

That passage goes directly against man's wisdom which says that all people are born good and only do bad things because of outside influences. Everyone is a victim and has a reason for being the way they are. God says that is a lie, we are born evil and the only way we will change is by allowing Him to change us.

You need to start viewing these thoughts of suicide as an attack by the devil and if you harbor them as sin. Put on your armor and strengthen your faith by reading your Bible. Ask God to help you and believe that He will and that He has the power to help you.
